Adventurous travelers can journey from Reedsport toward Eugene along the Smith River, winding their way through the mossy and seemingly endless forest of the Oregon Coastal Range.
Traveling this route all the way to Eugene, though interesting and beautiful, can be treacherous. It’s not recommended for winter travel. But even in winter, there’s much to see along the route’s western end. The 75-mile Smith River is a major tributary of the Umpqua River. The two rivers meet just north of Reedsport before meandering southward into Winchester Bay and into the Pacific Ocean.
